A Review of Quilts in Modern Color by Amber of Alderwood Studio

A Review of Quilts in Modern Color by Amber of Alderwood Studio

If you know me, you know that I often struggle with creating cohesive color stories for my quilts. Choosing and combining colors in a way that feels intentional and harmonious has always been a challenge for me.

To improve, I frequently turn to other quilters for inspiration, studying how they use and blend colors in their work. One of my go-to sources is Amber of Alderwood Studio, whose thoughtful approach to color has always resonated with me.

Now, she’s sharing her expertise in Quilts in Modern Color: Creating Ombre Color Palettes, a book that takes a deep dive into the art of ombre quilting. Through a combination of color theory and practical techniques, Amber guides quilters through the process of creating seamless color transitions.

The book features stunning quilt patterns in a variety of sizes and skill levels, making it accessible and inspiring for quilters at any stage of their creative journey.

I especially loved the section on color theory. My only prior experience with art came from high school classes, and to be honest, I barely studied—or remembered—anything about color theory. But Amber breaks it down into such simple, digestible chunks that I feel like I finally get it. Her explanation of the difference between gradients and ombre was a game-changer for me. I even realized that I’ve been using ombre palettes in some of my past projects without fully recognizing it!

While I haven’t had the chance to make a quilt directly from the book yet, reading it has given me a newfound confidence in my ability to work with ombre palettes. In fact, I now see my own designs through a new lens.

Here’s my latest pattern—a collaboration with Modern Makes Membership!

The Altamira Quilt is a block-based ombre quilt, featuring a beautifully layered color transition. The version I created in green hues reminds me of the rolling mountains of my hometown, Puerto Plata, in the Dominican Republic. It’s amazing how color placement alone can evoke a sense of place, movement, and emotion.

If you’ve ever felt intimidated by color selection or struggled to create smooth transitions in your quilts, I highly recommend Quilts in Modern Color. It’s a book that not only teaches, but also inspires. The projects in the book are just stunning!

Have you experimented with ombre palettes in your quilting? I’d love to hear about your experience!
